Prioritizing Safety in Challenging Times: Strengthening Security in Conflict-Affected Areas.

At COMAGEND, we have come to deeply understand the critical importance of personal security, particularly when working in a conflict-affected region. In such environments, the safety and well-being of our team members are not just priorities—they are essential for the successful implementation of our projects and the protection of those we serve. As we navigate through these challenging circumstances, we must remain vigilant and proactive in managing the risks associated with the work we do.

Recently, we had the opportunity to engage in a highly informative online training session led by Gaël LEOPOLD from Open Briefing, a renowned organization specializing in safety and risk management for humanitarian and development workers. This session was a timely and vital step for our team in assessing the various risks, threats, and exposures that we face on a daily basis in the context of our work.

During the training, we discussed the different aspects of security management—from the physical risks of working in conflict zones to the more subtle, but equally significant, digital and psychological threats that can arise. One key takeaway from the session was the realization of just how often we may neglect certain factors related to our personal and organizational security. As we continue our work in volatile areas, it is imperative that we remain aware of these potential dangers and develop strategies to mitigate them.

A major focus of the training was the development and implementation of effective safety measures. We explored how to assess security risks within our specific context and how to adopt proactive measures to safeguard our staff and partners. These included the adoption of security protocols, improved communication strategies, and enhanced situational awareness—all of which are crucial in maintaining a safe working environment.

The training also emphasized the importance of security preparedness, ensuring that every team member is equipped with the knowledge and tools to respond appropriately to emergencies. Whether it is knowing how to evacuate quickly, handle conflict-related stress, or simply being aware of safe communication practices, these small but crucial actions can make a huge difference in ensuring that we remain safe and effective in our work.

Reflecting on the insights gained from the session, it was clear that many of us had not fully appreciated the extent to which certain security risks can affect our personal and professional lives. Whether it was the digital footprint we leave behind or our exposure to social tensions, the session highlighted areas that had previously been overlooked.

This wake-up call has spurred us to revise our safety strategies and incorporate more comprehensive security plans into our daily routines. From developing more robust safety protocols to integrating stress management techniques for our team members, we now realize that security is an ongoing process, and we must constantly adapt to the changing realities around us.

We are incredibly grateful for the training and support provided by Gaël LEOPOLD and Open Briefing, which has equipped us with the knowledge to better protect ourselves and our community. Thanks to this session, we now feel more confident in our ability to navigate the risks inherent in our work and implement the necessary steps to ensure that our staff, partners, and beneficiaries remain safe.

As we continue to work in regions affected by conflict and insecurity, it is more important than ever that we remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding our personal and collective safety. By investing in security training, adopting effective safety measures, and fostering a culture of awareness and preparedness, we are ensuring that we can continue our mission with the necessary protection in place.
